You can’t reshoot a first kiss.

That sentence has run my work for over fifteen years. It started with weddings — the one day where there are no second takes — and it turned out to be true everywhere else. A product on a table, a portrait, a kid landing a trick in the last good light: the moment happens once. The job is to be ready for it and not get in its way.

Three things, every time: tell the story honestly, work the available light (or create it), stay out of the way. I don’t light a room I can use a window for, but I always have a flash on-hand if needed. I don’t direct a moment I can wait for. The pictures people keep are almost never the ones I posed them for.

Outside photography, I co-founded pretti.cool, a home goods brand I’ve helped build since 2017. It’s made me better at this — I know what a brand needs from an image because I’ve sat on the other side of the table, art-directing my own.

In their words.

“From the beginning we knew he was a solid choice because he sat down with us and we got to know each other before a camera was even involved. He cared about capturing what was important to us and listened to what we liked and that shows in these photos. He was organized so that when it came to taking the formals after the ceremony, we were ahead of schedule and Nick and I could relax before the reception. At the same time, Jeff wasn’t overbearing and was never a distraction throughout the night.”‍ — Tori

“Jeff took the time to meet us for coffee to get to know us. On our wedding day, his presence was truly a comfort to me. There were moments when our wedding timeline became delayed. Jeff remained calm, professional, and focused. He made the delays into an opportunity to capture amazing photographs of my husband and I. He made the whole process enjoyable, natural, and fun!” — Angela

“Words cannot express how truly wonderful it was to work with him. From our engagement shoot to the day of wedding, he was extremely communicative, incredibly flexible and wonderfully insightful during the process. Whenever we weren’t sure what to do or how to approach a situation, Jeff always had a helpful suggestion or piece of advice from his experience with other weddings / engagement shoots. He’s one of a kind.” — Meg
